River Stories...

Another beautiful place to visit is the Boyne Ramparts Heritage Walk in Navan, Co. Meath. The Boyne Valley rich culture, heritage, myths and legends can be experienced along the Boyne Navigation running from the Gateway to the Boyne Valley at Navan as far as Drogheda. Canals were built along the river between 1748 and 1800 to make it navigable for trade. Barges carried grain, coal, flour and other goods between riverside mills and the port at Drogheda. Along the 8km walk you could pass the ruins of a lock, bridge and cottage, manor of Ardmulchan Demesne, the ruins of Dunmoe Castle and a medieval Ardmulchan church with cemetery.

In this beautiful habitat you could see some beautiful birds and water creatures and we were certainly lucky to have met the moorhen and ducks swimming quietly on the canal, but apparently you could also spot the otter, the blue and orange kingfisher and the heron amongst others. We definitely like coming back to this walk for its beautiful surroundings and the tranquil sound of water that the river Boyne shares with us.
